How to Check the Coolant Level in a Car

2024 Acura Integra Dashboard and Wheel

What is coolant, and why is it important for your vehicle? Coolant is a fluid that transfers heat and regulates the temperature of the engine block and its parts. Engine coolant features an additive that prevents it from freezing below 32 degrees Fahrenheit or overheating above 212 degrees Fahrenheit.

Have you been wondering, “What is coolant, and when does coolant need to be replaced?” Ed Voyles Acura answers these questions and more in the guide below. We are happy to help with all of your vehicle service questions

Checking Your Coolant

If you’ve been wondering how to check the coolant level in a car, you are not alone. Fortunately, it is an easy task for Chamblee drivers to complete right at home. You don’t even have to open the radiator cap to check the level. All you have to do is look at the markings on the side of the reservoir. Does the coolant reach the “full” mark on the reservoir? If so, you’re good to go! If it doesn’t, remove the radiator cap and add the coolant or a 50/50 mix of coolant and water before hitting the roads of Brookhaven.

Be sure to read the bottle before adding any coolant to see whether or not it is premixed. While you are adding more coolant, it can be beneficial to inspect the hoses connected to the radiator for any leaks or damage.

Be sure the engine has cooled before you add more coolant. Do not attempt to open the radiator cap while the engine is hot.

When to Schedule Service

Now that you know how to check the coolant level in a car, you may be wondering when to replace your coolant. Coolant is thinner than oil but thicker than water. If the coolant has a sludgy appearance, it is time for service. This issue could be due to an internal gasket leak. Driving around Dunwoody with a leaking gasket will drain the coolant quickly, increasing the risk of your vehicle overheating.

Coolant levels deplete over time, so it’s a good idea to check the level every 3 to 6 months. Coolant is typically blue, green, yellow, or red. If it appears brown or colorless, flush the system and replace the coolant.
